Introduction
Ramesh had been preparing for the SSB for over a year. He had memorized every psychology test pattern, practiced dozens of group discussions, and could speak fluently on any topic. But when he stood at the starting line of the Individual Obstacles course, his heart sank. He had never climbed a rope. He had never jumped from a 12-foot platform. He had never even attempted a Burma Bridge.
He froze.
And just like that, months of preparation meant nothing. Because theΒ GTO obstaclesΒ in SSB are not optional. They are not a formality. They are aΒ make-or-breakΒ part of your selection process.
AtΒ Vision Defence InstituteΒ in Madurai, weβve seen countless brilliant candidates crumble on the GTO ground. Not because they werenβt smart enough β but because they underestimated the physical and mental demands ofΒ GTO tasks. The Group Testing Officer is not looking for a bodybuilder. He is looking forΒ courage, determination, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure.
This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know aboutΒ GTO obstacles β from the complete list of Individual Obstacles to Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Command Task, Snake Race, and more. Weβll break down the rules, share proven strategies, and give you a preparation plan that actually works.

Strategy for Individual Obstacles
-
Attempt easier obstacles firstΒ (1-6 points), then move to complex ones
-
Donβt waste timeΒ on an obstacle you find too difficult β skip it and move on
-
The number of obstacles completed doesnβt matter as much as your determination
-
Stay alertΒ β injuries during this round can affect your performance in other tasks
-
Keep tryingΒ even if you fail on the first attempt β never give up before the 3 minutes are over
Important:Β Candidates who completed just 5-6 obstacles have been recommended, as well as those who completed all ten and repeated 4-5 additional ones.Β Determination counts more than total score.
Progressive Group Task (PGT)
Progressive Group Task (PGT)Β is the first outdoor group task in the GTO series. It testsΒ teamwork, leadership, intelligence, and problem-solving.
The Rules
-
The group facesΒ four progressively difficult obstacles
-
Each obstacle hasΒ structures, planks, ropes, and other materials
-
Colour rule:Β Red areas are out of bounds β you cannot touch them
-
Group rule:Β The group cannot be split during the task
-
Listen to the GTOβsΒ briefing carefullyΒ β do not miss any information
-
Look at theΒ resourcesΒ (helping materials) provided to you
-
Obstacles can be crossed withΒ basic practical knowledge and common sense
Strategy for PGT
-
Donβt lose your composureΒ β stay calm and think clearly
-
Carefully look at the structuresΒ β they will have certain projections you can use
-
Involve everyoneΒ β donβt let silent members remain unused
-
Focus on aim clarityΒ β know what youβre trying to achieve
-
Avoid over-dominanceΒ β one person doing everything is a red flag
-
Physics mattersΒ β understand concepts like centre of gravity
Group Obstacle Race / Snake Race (GOR)
Group Obstacle Race (GOR), also calledΒ Snake Race, is the fourth task in the GTO series. It is aΒ high-tempo competitive taskΒ where 3-4 groups race against each other.
The Snake
-
Each group carries aΒ rolled-up tentΒ (6-8 feet long) called a “snake”
-
The snake must be carried overΒ six obstacles
The Rules
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Snake on ground | Once picked up, snake cannot touch the ground until race is complete |
| Individual running | Prohibited β group must run together |
| Snake folding | Snake cannot be folded or shortened |
| Snake parallel | Must be carried parallel to the ground |
| Between obstacles | ALL candidates must hold the snake |
| On obstacles | Minimum 3 candidates must hold the snake |
| Same path | Snake must follow the same path as candidates |
| Colour rule | Same as PGT β red areas are out of bounds |
Typical Obstacles in Snake Race
-
Inclined ramp / Zig-zag structuresΒ β Tests balance under load
-
Figure-of-eight (Gate) obstacleΒ β Tests leadership and group sequencing
-
Wall climb (18-20 feet tall)Β β Requires teamwork and coordination
-
Smaller walls or pipesΒ β Balance and coordination tests
-
Large wooden structuresΒ β Tests upper-body strength and group communication
-
Final obstacleΒ β Tests endurance after previous five obstacles
Strategy for Snake Race
-
Shout war cries loudlyΒ β motivate your group and spook rivals
-
Wait for othersΒ β even if you cross first, wait for the group
-
Help weaker membersΒ β group cohesion is key
-
Keep the snake parallelΒ β avoid penalties
-
Maintain communicationΒ β coordinate every move
Half Group Task (HGT)
Half Group Task (HGT)Β is similar to PGT but with a smaller group. The original group is divided intoΒ two subgroups of 5-7 candidates.
Why HGT Matters
-
Each subgroup gets a chance toΒ display leadership more visibly
-
It allowsΒ better individual participation
-
Assessors can observeΒ who takes initiativeΒ in a smaller setting
Strategy for HGT
-
Step up and leadΒ β this is your chance to shine
-
Involve every memberΒ β smaller group means everyone must contribute
-
Same PGT rules applyΒ β colour rule, group rule, etc.
Command Task (CT)
Command TaskΒ is aΒ leadership taskΒ where you are made the commander. You commandΒ subordinatesΒ (other candidates) to complete an obstacle.
What the GTO Looks For
-
Communication skillsΒ β can you give clear, concise orders?
-
LeadershipΒ β do subordinates follow you willingly?
-
Decision-makingΒ β can you make quick decisions under pressure?
-
CooperationΒ β do you listen to suggestions?
Strategy for Command Task
-
Choose responsive subordinates
-
Give clear ordersΒ β be specific and unambiguous
-
Remain calmΒ while executing
-
Donβt dominateΒ β leadership is about guiding, not ordering
-
Listen to suggestionsΒ β the best leaders are open to input
Lecturette
LecturetteΒ is an indoor GTO task where you deliver aΒ 3-minute speechΒ on a given topic.
Format
-
You are givenΒ four topicsΒ to choose from
-
You getΒ 3 minutes to prepare
-
You must speak forΒ 3 minutesΒ in front of the group
What the GTO Assesses
-
Self-confidence
-
Public speaking ability
-
KnowledgeΒ of current affairs and general topics
-
ClarityΒ and structure of thoughts
-
Ability to engage the audience
Strategy for Lecturette
-
Choose a topic you are comfortable with
-
Structure your speechΒ β Introduction, Body, Conclusion
-
Use facts and examplesΒ to support your points
-
Maintain eye contactΒ with the group
-
Speak with confidenceΒ β even if youβre nervous, donβt show it
How GTO Assesses Candidates
TheΒ GTO does not recommend candidates based on tricks or techniques. He recommends candidates based onΒ consistent positive traits visible across tasks.
What the GTO Watches For
| Quality | How Itβs Assessed |
|---|---|
| Leadership | Do you take charge naturally? Do others follow? |
| Teamwork | Do you cooperate? Do you put the group first? |
| Communication | Can you express ideas clearly? Do you listen? |
| Decision-Making | Can you make quick, sound decisions? |
| Confidence | Do you trust yourself under pressure? |
| Physical Fitness | Can you keep up with the demands? |
| Determination | Do you persist despite obstacles? |
| Courage | Are you willing to take risks? |
The Consistency Principle
Your behaviour is observedΒ across all tasksΒ β from the Group Discussion to the Command Task. If you show confidence in the Lecturette but hesitation in Individual Obstacles, the GTO will notice the inconsistency.
Remember:Β The GTO is looking forΒ natural behaviours that reflect Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)Β β not rehearsed performances.
Common Mistakes During GTO Obstacles
1. Ignorance of Rules
The mistake:Β Overlooking instructions thinking theyβre not important.
The fix:Β Listen carefully to every word the GTO says. Whatever they want from the task is spoken in the instructions themselves.
2. Not Listening to the GTO
The mistake:Β Getting bored during long instructions and losing track.
The fix:Β Pay attention β especially if youβre a repeater who thinks you already know everything.
3. Leadership vs. Dominance
The mistake:Β Confusing dominance with leadership.
The fix:Β Lead by example. Go ahead and show others what to do, rather than just giving orders.
4. Speaking on Othersβ Behalf
The mistake:Β Acting as a mediator and speaking for weaker members.
The fix:Β Encourage weaker members by listening to them β donβt speak for them. Everyone is responsible for themselves.
5. Fixing Things in Advance
The mistake:Β Trying to manipulate outcomes by pre-deciding who will do what.
The fix:Β Any amount of manipulation will not work β in fact, it will backfire. Spend time in genuine preparation instead.
6. Poor Physical Fitness
The mistake:Β Not being physically prepared for obstacles.
The fix:Β Build stamina, agility, and strength before you reach the SSB centre.
7. Hesitation at Obstacles
The mistake:Β Freezing or hesitating at difficult obstacles.
The fix:Β Trust your training and go for it. Hesitation shows lack of courage.

Strength vs Teamwork: Finding the Balance
One of the biggest misconceptions about GTO obstacles is thatΒ brute strengthΒ is what matters. This is completely false.
What Really Matters
-
Teamwork over individual strengthΒ β In PGT, HGT, and Snake Race, how you work with others matters more than how strong you are
-
Determination over physical abilityΒ β In Individual Obstacles, your willingness to keep trying matters more than how many obstacles you complete
-
Intelligence over forceΒ β Understanding physics concepts like centre of gravity helps you cross obstacles smarter, not harder
-
Communication over shoutingΒ β Clear communication beats loud domination
-
Cooperation over competitionΒ β In group tasks, helping others succeed is what the GTO wants to see
Conclusion
The GTO obstacles in SSB are not just physical challenges β they areΒ personality tests. The Group Testing Officer is watching how you think, how you lead, how you cooperate, and how you handle pressure.
